Premier Synthetic Grass was founded by Rathnadeepa “Sam” Samarakoon, driven by his commitment to delivering high-quality, affordable products. His journey began in 2003 after a frustrating experience with an unknown artificial turf installer, which inspired him to create a leading synthetic grass company in Australia and the USA, focused on quality and innovation.

Sam, a former elite sprinter for Sri Lanka, gained valuable insights into synthetic materials through his athletic background. After earning a Bachelor of Electronic Commerce, he built a successful 13-year career at Coles Group, which he left to pursue entrepreneurship in the ATM industry, founding the Australian ATM Network.

In 2012, he launched Premier Synthetic Grass, initially catering to builders and wholesalers. The company quickly gained traction, leading to the opening of its first retail location in Melbourne in 2013. As demand grew, Premier expanded to Brisbane and Sydney, and in 2020, Sam entered the U.S. market with operations in Los Angeles. Sam has developed several related brands, such as Premier Grass and K9Grass, and the company has received multiple awards, including “Best Installation of the Year” in Washington, D.C. His dedication to quality and innovation positions Premier Synthetic Grass as a trusted leader in the industry, committed to providing products that ensure customer satisfaction for years to come.

Founding of Premier Synthetic Grass 2012

In 2012, Sam founded Premier Synthetic Grass after discovering the rapidly growing Synthetic Grass industry. Despite having no prior experience in the field, Sam was driven by a strong customer service background and a passion for innovation. He began by supplying high-quality synthetic grass products to builders and tradespeople, quickly establishing a reputation for exceptional service and reliability. In 2012 Premier Grass Started .

Growth and Expansion to Brisbane 2015

Premier Synthetic Grass’s commitment to quality, durability, and safety—while maintaining a realistic, natural appearance led to tremendous success. This success paved the way for the company’s first expansion, opening a branch in Brisbane. The decision to expand into Brisbane was driven by the introduction of the innovative Hollow HydroChill Grass, a revolutionary product designed specifically for the region’s tropical climate. With Brisbane’s hot and humid weather, this exclusive product offered a cooling effect, making it the perfect solution for local customers seeking a superior synthetic grass option

Innovation and Collaboration with Global Manufacturers 2016

Since then, Sam has dedicated much of his time working closely with world-leading manufacturers in the Netherlands, Asia, and beyond, including the largest global synthetic grass producers and their R&D labs. Through these partnerships, Sam sought innovative solutions to meet evolving customer needs.

K9 Grass Range 2017

One of the standout achievements was the introduction of the K9 Grass range, featuring advanced antimicrobial and cooling technologies. This specialized product quickly gained popularity, especially in dog kennels and pet facilities across the country. K9 Grass became the go-to artificial grass solution for pet owners, dog kennels, and even prestigious clients like the Australian Defence Force and the Australian Federal Police, who installed it in their K9 training facilities. Its durability, safety features, and ability to withstand heavy use made it the most practical choice for these high-demand environments.

2017 Sydney Expansion and Champion Grass Brand Launch

In 2017, Premier Synthetic Grass expanded its operations to Sydney, opening a showroom and installation team in Wetherill Park. That same year, the Champion Grass brand was launched to meet the growing demand for high-performance turf for sports fields, school playgrounds, and council areas. The success of Champion Grass in delivering quality sports fields across the country led Premier Synthetic Grass to win the Installation of the Year award in 2022 for the Multi-Sports Category, presented by the Synthetic Turf Council in Washington, USA.

International Expansion: Premier Grass USA

In its pursuit of global growth, Premier Synthetic Grass expanded internationally by launching the Premier Grass USA brand in Los Angeles, California, with Sam’s cousin, Vas, leading the operations. Just after the brand’s launch, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, presenting significant challenges for the new U.S. operation. Despite the tough start, Premier Grass USA was resilient, navigating the hurdles of the pandemic and emerging stronger. Today, Premier Grass USA is thriving, with a growing presence across California, installing high-quality artificial grass for residential, commercial, and sports field projects throughout the state.
